By Jon Paul HoornstraShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberRight-handed pitcher Nick Burdi, who made four scoreless appearances for the Boston Red Sox in 2025, has signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets.
Burdi, 32, is 3-2 with a 5.34 ERA in 35 career relief appearances. Burdi has pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates (2018-20), Chicago Cubs (2023), New York Yankees (2024) and Red Sox (2025) in parts of six major league seasons.

A former second-round pick by the Minnesota Twins in the 2014 MLB draft, Burdi has also pitched in the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies organizations.
...Burdi spent the majority of the 2025 season with Triple-A Worcester. He went 4-0 with a 2.83 ERA in 31 appearances out of the bullpen for the Red Sox's top farm team. He allowed only 28 hits, 16 walks, and struck out 45 in 35 innings while holding opponents to a .214 batting average.

Burdi missed all of June and most of July 2025 with a hip injury. Despite his early-season success, he didn't return to the big leagues after the injury, and finished the season at Worcester.
Injuries help to explain the vagabond nature of Burdi's career. He missed all of 2021 and 2022 recovering from Tommy John surgery, the second such procedure of his career.
More news: Mets Cut $17 Million Pitcher After Disappointing Season
In May 2023, the Cubs placed Burdi on the injured list after he underwent an emergency appendectomy.
Despite his injuries, Burdi's pitch arsenal still has plenty of life. He throws both a sinker and a four-seam fastball, offset by a slider. Last year, his sinker averaged 93.6 mph and his four-seamer 94.8 mph — both roughly league-average velocities.
However, Burdi's fastball averaged 97.5 in the majors in a slightly larger sample in 2024, suggesting a downward trend. Against this backdrop, it's not surprising to see the veteran sign a minor-league contract.
Nor would it be a surprise if Burdi is able to bounce back from another injury-marred season to contribute to the Mets' bullpen at some point in 2026.
