Madden began his foray into football by playing for multiple colleges in the late 1950s, ending his last two seasons at Cal Poly in 1957 and 1958. Though he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, injuries would lead to his not playing in a professional game.
Madden would then transition into coaching, getting his first chance with Hancock from 1960 to 1961 as an offensive assistant. After being promoted to head coach in 1962 by Hancock and leaving in 1963, he would spend the next few seasons with San Diego State as a defensive coordinator.
After the 1966 season, Madden moved into the NFL, serving as linebackers coach from 1967 to 1968, and then was promoted again to head coach from 1969 to 1978. There, he would help the Raiders win the Super Bowl in the 1977 season.
Madden ended his NFL head coaching career with a 112–39–7 record.
Following his time coaching, the charismatic NFL personality would move into a broadcast role with CBS in 1979 as a color commentator. It was not long before his grandiose personality led him to become a top football broadcasting duo with Pat Summerall in 1981.
From 1981 to 2009, he was arguably the greatest NFL broadcaster, being the voice of football for generations and taking home 16 Sports Emmys in that time.
Madden died at the age of 85 in 2021, leaving behind an unmatched legacy.
