The Boston Red Sox seem poised to make another postseason run next year. They began the offseason with a bang as it was announced they had traded for starting pitcher Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals.
Gray is going to be a solid addition to a rotation that needed another arm. But the Red Sox need to make another move or two in free agency to bolster their roster even more.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently reported that the Red Sox were targeting a new contract with star infielder Alex Bregman in free agency.
..."The Red Sox are considering signing up to two of these five big-time lineup enhancements: uberpopular Kyle Schwarber, plus Pete Alonso, Kazuma Okamoto and J.T. Realmuto, as well as last winter’s big pickup Alex Bregman," Heyman wrote. "With the quarter-billion dollars saved from the smart midseason dumping of Rafael Devers, Boston looks like a huge player this winter in what shapes up as a battle royal in baseball’s only division featuring three legit big-market teams.
"Bregman seems the most likely fit, but they’d love another big bat, with righty hitters preferred, although Schwarber is strongly in the mix following his brilliant 56-homer season, excellent clubhouse rep and familiarity from his cameo there in 2021."
Bregman should be the Red Sox's top priority this offseason. He's projected to sign for $182 million, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic, which should fit in the Red Sox's payroll.
Bregman had a huge year with the Red Sox this season, and Boston would like him back for another few seasons. It would also help close the gap on the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East after Toronto reportedly agreed to a deal with Dylan Cease.
