The New York Mets made the biggest trade of the offseason so far when they reportedly agreed to send Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers on Sunday.
The move reportedly would bring experienced veteran Marcus Semien to Queens where he is essentially locked in, barring any unforeseen circumstances, to play second base as Francisco Lindor's double play partner next year. Despite being 35 years old, Semien is still producing at a high level in the Major Leagues.
With the major trade reportedly in place, many Mets fans are now wondering what happens to the team's biggest stars, Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz. Nimmo was the longest-tenured player on the team, and the front office reportedly shipped him out in the blink of an eye. Will Sammon from The Athletic believes this does not bode well for the other superstars.
..."By agreeing to trade outfielder Brandon Nimmo, the club’s longest-tenured player and a fan favorite, to the Texas Rangers for second baseman Marcus Semien on Sunday, per league sources, Stearns showed sentimentality is not going to interfere with his plans," Sammon wrote for The Athletic. "Clearly, he is up to the task of putting that part of him to the side if it means improving his team."
It has previously been reported by many outlets that owner Steve Cohen was a major part of the reason why Alonso was brought back last offseason. Cohen did not want to upset the fanbase and pushed Stearns to make a deal happen. The odds of that happening again don't appear to be likely.
"Diaz and Alonso are also beloved Mets," Sammon added. "The Mets hold interest in re-signing both of them. But the Mets are not going to be persuaded by emotion. It may play some part. But if either or both Díaz and Alonso return, it will mostly be because the cold, hard facts said it made sense to the Mets to bring them back."
Sammon also noted the Mets have had plenty of conversations with Devin Williams and Robert Suarez to prepare to fill the closer void in the event that Diaz does not return. He added many front office executives around the league have noted Stearns' ability to make emotionless decisions to do what is best for the organization.
While there is still some sense of hope the Mets bring back both of their stars, the odds of it happening appear to be much lower with Nimmo reportedly set to become the newest member of the Texas Rangers.
